As a Western Sydney family and maternity photographer, I look for places that feel calm and natural. Here are ten of my favourite locations across Penrith, The Hills Shire, the Lower Blue Mountains and surrounding areas, all tried and loved for their light, textures and atmosphere.
1. Werrington Lakes, Penrith
Werrington Lakes is a local favourite for families who want an easy, relaxed setting close to home. The walking paths, tall reeds and open water create a soft, natural look at sunset. It is perfect for both maternity and family sessions because there is space for little ones to explore while still feeling peaceful. Golden hour here creates that dreamy glow that brings photos to life.
2. Wianamatta Regional Park, Jordan Springs
Just minutes from Ropes Crossing, Wianamatta Regional Park is a quiet, open bushland space that captures the natural beauty of Western Sydney. The native trees, soft grass and walking trails create an earthy, timeless backdrop for family and maternity sessions. The light in the late afternoon is especially beautiful, filtering gently through the eucalypts. It feels calm, unposed and completely natural, perfect for photos that focus on connection.
Because it’s never too busy, it’s ideal for families with toddlers or expecting mums who prefer a peaceful atmosphere without distractions.
3. Regatta Park, Emu Plains
Regatta Park has become one of Penrith’s most loved family spots. The Nepean River, open lawns and gentle light make it ideal for outdoor photos. It works beautifully for maternity sessions because there are plenty of quiet spots to create intimate, emotional portraits, as well as open areas for playful family shots.
4. Yarramundi Reserve, Agnes Banks
If you love a more rugged, natural setting, Yarramundi Reserve is perfect. The sandy banks of the Nepean River, surrounded by bushland and mountain views, create a stunning backdrop. It offers variety, with both water and open grass areas, and is particularly beautiful at sunset when the colours reflect off the water.
5. The Hills District Parks
The Hills area has some of the most picturesque parks in Sydney, especially around Castle Hill, Rouse Hill and Dural. Fagan Park in Galston is a standout, offering vibrant gardens, old trees and plenty of space for children to play. The different garden areas at Fagan Park create a variety of looks within one session. It is perfect for families who want both colour and natural light in their gallery.
6. The Dairy, Western Sydney Parklands
The Dairy, tucked within the Western Sydney Parklands near Abbotsbury, is one of my favourite hidden gems. With rolling hills, tall trees and wide open fields, it offers a calm and timeless setting that photographs beautifully all year round.
The sunsets here are especially soft and golden, making it a perfect spot for maternity or family sessions. The rustic landscape adds a touch of warmth and texture, and there is plenty of space for kids to run and explore freely.
7. Lennox Bridge Lookout, Glenbrook
For families or couples who love something a little more scenic, Lennox Bridge in the Lower Blue Mountains offers breathtaking views surrounded by trees and stone architecture. It gives a romantic, grounded feel to maternity photos and captures that balance between nature and history that makes the Blue Mountains so unique.
8. Nurragingy Reserve, Doonside
Nurragingy Reserve is one of Western Sydney’s most versatile photo locations. With open lawns, forest paths, ponds and the beautiful Chinese Gardens, it offers a wide variety of looks in one spot. It is perfect for families with young children because it combines natural beauty with easy parking and amenities. The gardens photograph beautifully in every season, especially during golden hour when the trees filter soft light over the water. 9. Rouse Hill Regional Park
Rouse Hill Regional Park is perfect for families with young children. It has grassy fields, open trees and wide walking paths that make it easy to move between spots without rushing. The park’s mix of open space and soft backdrops gives you a variety of photo options, from playful moments to quiet, emotional portraits.
10. Your Own Backyard
Sometimes the most meaningful location is the one right outside your door. If your home has a garden, a patio with nice light or a view of the sunset, it can be just as magical as any park. Your children feel comfortable there, and the memories you create in your own space are deeply personal.
