Pregnancy is one of the most incredible seasons of life. It is full of anticipation, emotion and change. A maternity photoshoot isn’t just about capturing a baby bump; it’s about preserving how it felt to become a mother.

At Nurtured Moments Photography, I love helping expecting mums across Western Sydney, Penrith, the Lower Blue Mountains and The Hills Shire capture these fleeting moments in a way that feels honest and effortless. One of the most common questions I’m asked before a session is:

“What should I wear for my maternity photos?”

This guide walks you through everything, from colours and fabrics to modest styling and family coordination, so you can feel confident, comfortable and truly yourself in every image.

1. Start With How You Want to Feel

Before you even think about outfits, take a moment to imagine what you want your photos to feel like.

Do you want soft and romantic images full of movement and light? Or something grounded and earthy, capturing your natural beauty at home or in nature? Your wardrobe sets the tone.

Flowy dresses bring softness and motion, while fitted pieces highlight your beautiful bump and create shape. There’s no single right answer. It’s about what makes you feel most like you.

2. Embrace Soft, Neutral Tones

Neutral and earthy colours photograph beautifully in natural light. Think cream, beige, oatmeal, muted olive, dusty rose, taupe or soft blush. These tones co.mplement every skin tone and help draw the viewer’s focus to your connection, not the clothes. Bright colours, busy prints and logos can distract from that emotion and warmth, so I recommend keeping things simple and timeless.

If you’re planning an outdoor shoot, consider your backdrop too:

  • Lush greenery or fields: Warm neutrals, rust or soft terracotta
  • Beaches or open sky: Whites, creams, pale blues or sandy tones
  • In-home sessions: Soft pastels or neutral knits for a cosy, intimate look

3. Choose Fabrics That Move and Breathe

Fabrics are key to capturing that dreamy, light-filled aesthetic. Linen, cotton and soft knits photograph beautifully. They catch the light in all the right ways and feel effortless.

Avoid heavy or stiff materials that restrict movement. Instead, go for dresses or skirts that allow gentle motion, that swirl when you walk or sway when you laugh. If your shoot is in the cooler months, layering with a light cardigan or textured wrap adds depth and comfort without losing that natural feel.

4. Keep Comfort and Style in Mind

As a mum and photographer, I know that comfort is everything, especially during pregnancy.

If you prefer a modest look, long sleeves, high necklines or flowy silhouettes can look incredibly elegant and timeless. A loose maxi dress or a wrap dress layered with a light duster or kimono adds both shape and movement while keeping you covered.

If you’re more comfortable showing your bump, fitted ribbed dresses or two-piece sets can highlight your shape beautifully. It’s entirely up to your personal style. At Nurtured Moments Photography, I’ll always help guide you toward outfits that honour your comfort, values and the story we’re telling.

5. Coordinate, Don’t Match

If your partner or little one will be in the photos too, aim for coordinated colours rather than identical outfits. Think about creating harmony through tones and textures. For example:

  • Mum in a cream dress, partner in beige chinos and a linen shirt
  • Mum in blush, partner in soft grey or white
  • Kids in neutral cotton pieces or knit rompers

Avoid everyone wearing the same colour, like all-white or all-black. Subtle variation keeps your images natural and layered, not flat or overly staged.

6. Think About Texture and Layers

Texture adds visual interest and helps light wrap around the body beautifully. Add subtle layers through knits, cardigans, wraps or a soft blanket. If you’re doing an in-home session, a cosy throw or textured pillow can add warmth and intimacy to your photos. Little details like lace trim, buttons or a hint of embroidery can elevate a simple outfit without overpowering it.

7. Consider the Season and Setting

The light, colours and feel of your shoot will shift depending on the time of year and location:

Spring and Summer: Flowy dresses, light tones and airy fabrics

Autumn: Warm neutrals, knits and subtle layering

Winter: Long sleeves, thicker textures and muted tones

If we’re shooting in a park or open field around Penrith or the Lower Blue Mountains, I recommend dressing for comfort. Low heels or flat sandals you can walk in, and a backup cardigan for when the sun dips below the horizon.

8. Accessorise Lightly

Keep accessories minimal. They should complement your look, not take away from it. Simple gold or silver jewellery, soft waves or a loose bun, and bare feet or simple sandals complete the relaxed aesthetic. If there’s something sentimental you’d like to include, like a family heirloom, a piece of jewellery or a cultural accessory, bring it along. It’s those personal touches that make your images meaningful.

9. Bring a Second Option (Optional but Helpful)

Sometimes a second outfit adds variety to your gallery, one flowy and light, and another more fitted or structured.

You can also layer your look by adding a cardigan, scarf or accessory partway through your shoot for subtle variety. I’ll help you decide during the session which outfit suits the light and setting best.

10. The Most Important Rule: Be Yourself

Your maternity session is about connection, not perfection. It’s about capturing the softness in your hands as you cradle your bump, the laughter between you and your partner and the quiet anticipation that fills this season. Wear what makes you feel like you. Whether that’s a flowing dress, a knit set or a simple linen gown, the magic lies in your authenticity.
