Pregnancy is one of the most beautiful seasons of your life — full of anticipation, change, and countless moments you’ll want to remember forever. Whether this is your first baby or you’re already a seasoned mum, maternity photography captures the quiet strength, softness and love that naturally unfolds during these weeks.
One of the questions I’m asked most often by Western Sydney mums is:
“When is the best time to take maternity photos?”
Let’s break it down so you can feel confident choosing the perfect moment for your session.
The Short Answer: 28 to 36 Weeks
For most women, the sweet spot for maternity photography falls between:
✔ 28 and 36 weeks
✔ late second trimester into early third trimester
This is when your bump is beautifully round, your energy levels are still manageable, and movement feels comfortable enough to enjoy being outdoors or posing gently at home.
Of course, every pregnancy is different — but this range works best for the majority of women I photograph across Western Sydney, Penrith, Rouse Hill and The Hills Shire.
Why Timing Matters
Your comfort and confidence matter the most. Here’s why this timeframe works:
1. Your bump is showing beautifully
Before 28 weeks, bumps can be a little shy — especially in first pregnancies.
After 36 weeks, some mums feel more tired, swollen, or uncomfortable moving around.
2. You’ll still feel more mobile
Walking through parks or moving into simple poses feels easier in this window.
3. You’re less likely to miss the moment
Babies love surprises — and early labour is more common than we think.
Booking too late can mean missing your session altogether.
4. Your energy levels are more balanced
By early third trimester, nausea and fatigue usually settle compared to the first trimester.
First Pregnancy vs Second (or Third)
Your bump makes its appearance on its own timeline, depending on whether you’ve carried before.
First-time mums usually show later
You may prefer scheduling your maternity session between 32–36 weeks.
Second, third or fourth pregnancies show much earlier
Your belly pops sooner, so an earlier timeframe like 28–32 weeks can be perfect.
High-Risk or Complicated Pregnancies? Go Earlier.
If you’re experiencing:
- high-risk pregnancy
- twins or multiples
- early contractions
- pre-term labour signs
Then it’s best to plan closer to 26–30 weeks, while you’re feeling well and comfortable.
Safety and flexibility always come first.
How Western Sydney Weather Affects Timing
Because most of my maternity sessions take place outdoors at sunset, the season and light in Western Sydney play a huge role.
Summer (Dec–Feb):
- Later sunsets
- Gorgeous golden light
- Hot afternoons → plan for 7:00–7:45pm sessions
Autumn (Mar–May):
- PERFECT weather
- Soft, warm light
- Earlier sunset → ideal for families with little ones
- This is the most popular maternity season.
Winter (Jun–Aug):
- Crisp air
- Stunning neutral tones
- Early sunsets (4:45–5:00pm)
- Beautiful if you want a cosy, soft vibe.
Spring (Sep–Nov):
- Wildflowers
- Perfect temps
- A dreamy time for maternity photography
- Choosing Between In-Home vs Outdoor Sessions
- Both are beautiful — it depends on your vision.
Outdoor Maternity Photography
Best for:
- Golden hour lovers
- Flowing dresses
- Dreamy, nature-filled images
- Larger families
Locations I love:
Rouse Hill, Penrith riverbanks, The Hills conservation tracks, Bella Vista fields.
In-Home Maternity Photography
Best for:
- Soft and emotional storytelling
- Minimal movement
- Families with toddlers
- A calm and comfortable experience
- Includes lifestyle moments like the nursery, living room, or intimate belly shots.
When Should You Book?
The earlier, the better — especially if you want a weekend sunset session.
Most mums book:
- During the second trimester
- As soon as they decide on a photographer
- Before they hit 20 weeks
- This guarantees availability during your ideal window.
Your maternity session is about more than photographs — it’s about honouring a moment in your life that’ll never look or feel the same again. No matter how far along you are, there’s always time to capture the beauty of your journey.
If you're expecting and wondering when to book your session, feel free to reach out. I’d love to help you choose the perfect time and create something meaningful for your family.
